The Harambee Stars have received a major financial boost following their 1-0 victory against the Democratic Republic of Congo in the opening match of the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN). The national football team was awarded KSh 42 million by the government as a fulfillment of a pledge made prior to the tournament.
Each of the 27 players and 15 technical bench members received KSh 1 million, marking a clear commitment by the government to motivate and support the team in their continental campaign. This gesture follows a promise made to the squad ahead of the competition, where a tiered reward system was laid out based on their progression in the tournament.
The reward came shortly after a memorable performance in which midfielder Austine Odhiambo scored the only goal of the match with an impressive solo effort just before half-time. The game was played at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, in front of a large and passionate home crowd that energized the players throughout the match.
This incentive scheme underscores the importance the country is placing on sporting success, with the overall reward for winning the tournament set at KSh 600 million. Additional bonuses have also been lined up for the team should they progress to the quarter-finals, semi-finals, and finals.
Kenya’s performance in CHAN 2024 is drawing regional attention, with the country’s reward package outshining those of tournament co-hosts Uganda and Tanzania. Uganda has pledged KSh 301 million for a tournament win, while Tanzania is offering KSh 51 million.
The win over DR Congo sets Kenya on a promising path in the tournament. The Harambee Stars are now preparing to face Angola on Thursday, August 7. Following that, they will take on Morocco on Sunday, August 10, before wrapping up their group stage fixtures against Zambia on August 17.
With strong government backing, home support, and a focused squad under the leadership of Coach Benni McCarthy, Kenya’s hopes for progressing to the knockout rounds look increasingly promising. Another victory in the upcoming matches could further energize the nation and unlock additional rewards.
