Harambee Starlets have secured a spot in the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after a dominant 4-1 aggregate victory over The Gambia. The Kenyan women’s football team sealed their qualification with a 1-0 win in the return leg, played at the Stade Lat Dior in Thiès, Senegal, completing their path back to the continental tournament after a nine-year hiatus.
The Starlets entered the final qualifying round with a comfortable 3-1 advantage from the first leg played at Nyayo Stadium, thanks to goals from Mwanalima Adam, Fasila Adhiambo, and young talent Shaylene Opisa. The team only needed to maintain their composure away from home, and it was veteran forward Mwanalima Adam who delivered the decisive blow in the 56th minute to ensure Kenya’s qualification.
Coach Beldine Odemba’s side embarked on a challenging journey that began with a hard-fought 1-0 aggregate win over Tunisia, with Tereza Engesha scoring the only goal in the first round. Odemba’s strategic planning and the team’s unwavering commitment were critical throughout the qualifying process.
In the post-match interview, an overjoyed Coach Odemba expressed her pride in the team’s resilience. “We’ve waited for this moment for a long time,” she said. “The girls have shown incredible character and focus throughout this journey. Every game, every training session, and every camp has been building toward this achievement. The players deserve all the credit for their discipline and effort.”
The qualification marks a major milestone for Kenyan women’s football, showcasing the growth and sustained efforts by players, coaches, and the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) in elevating the women’s game. The Starlets’ return to the continental stage is not just a victory, but a testament to their progress and the rising status of women’s football in Kenya.
With their eyes now set on the upcoming tournament in Morocco, the Harambee Starlets are more determined than ever to compete against Africa’s best and continue to make their mark on the continental stage.
