Kenya’s Harambee Starlets made a major stride toward qualifying for the 2026 Africa Women’s Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after defeating The Gambia 3-1 in the first leg of their second-round qualifier at Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi.
The match began on a tense note for the home side as The Gambia took the lead just two minutes in. Sevilla striker Fatoumata Kanteh capitalized on a defensive lapse by Lorine Ilavonga to put the visitors ahead early. However, the Starlets quickly recovered their composure and responded within ten minutes when forward Mwanahalima Adam converted a penalty to level the score.
From that point, Kenya dominated proceedings, controlling possession and creating several chances. Fasila Kamama Adhiambo fired the hosts ahead with a well-taken finish before debutant Shirleen Opisa added a third goal to give Kenya a comfortable cushion. Captain Beldine Odemba led from the front, organizing the team with composure and determination throughout the match.
The Gambia, ranked 121st globally, found it difficult to handle Kenya’s pace and physicality. Their defensive structure crumbled under sustained pressure, allowing the Starlets to take a vital two-goal advantage into the return leg.
The second leg will be played on Tuesday, October 28, in Thies, Senegal—approximately 70 kilometers east of Dakar—after The Gambia failed to secure a CAF-approved home venue. Kenya will only need to avoid defeat by two or more goals to seal qualification for the 2026 WAFCON.
If successful, the Harambee Starlets will make their second appearance at the continental tournament, having debuted in 2016. The 2026 edition of the Africa Women’s Cup of Nations will take place in Morocco from March 13 to April 7, 2026.
With this commanding first-leg win, Kenya now stands on the brink of returning to Africa’s biggest women’s football stage, marking a promising chapter for the nation’s growing football ambitions.
