Harambee Stars might have exited the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) at the quarter-final stage, but their performances left a lasting mark on the continent. Considered underdogs before the tournament, Kenya surprised many by topping the so-called “Group of Death” with victories over DR Congo, Morocco, and Zambia, plus a draw against Angola. Although their journey ended against Madagascar on penalties, several players emerged as standout stars whose reputations soared during the competition.
Alpha Onyango
The Gor Mahia midfielder was central to Kenya’s success, dictating play from the middle of the park. His ability to intercept danger, link defence to attack, and drive the team forward made him the engine of the side. Twice voted man of the match, Onyango’s performances have elevated his profile and sparked interest beyond Kenya.
Manzur Okwaro
Originally a defender, the KCB youngster slotted seamlessly into central midfield and offered immense protection for the backline. Calm under pressure and sharp in reading the game, Okwaro helped Kenya concede just two goals in five matches. His versatility and maturity have made him one of the brightest prospects, with potential suitors from North Africa and Europe monitoring his progress.
Byrne Omondi
Between the sticks, Omondi was a revelation. Three clean sheets in five matches told the story of his importance. His agility, shot-stopping ability, and composure gave Kenya defensive stability. Omondi also showcased excellent distribution, launching attacks from the back. After overcoming injury setbacks, he has firmly reestablished himself as the country’s number one goalkeeper.
Michael Kibwage
Despite missing a penalty in the shootout against Madagascar, the Gor Mahia defender’s overall contribution was outstanding. Once given the chance to start, he showed leadership and composure, marshalling the backline with authority. His aerial dominance and accurate passing added an extra dimension to Kenya’s play, proving why he is highly valued.
Ryan Ogam
Tusker striker Ryan Ogam silenced doubts over his fitness by delivering when it mattered most. His match-winning goals against Morocco and Zambia underlined his efficiency in front of goal. A natural poacher, Ogam thrives on limited chances and showed he can lead the line effectively. His presence provided coach Benni McCarthy with a reliable alternative to Michael Olunga and boosted his chances of a move abroad.
Kenya may not have gone all the way, but these five players ensured Harambee Stars’ CHAN 2024 campaign will be remembered as a turning point for both their individual careers and the team’s future ambitions.
