Kenyan footballers showcased their talents across Europe, Asia, and Africa over the weekend, with Michael Olunga and Zak Vyner among those who stood out for their clubs. From dramatic late winners in Qatar to commanding performances in England’s Championship, Harambee Stars abroad continued to make their presence felt.
In Qatar, striker Michael Olunga featured for the full 90 minutes as Al Arabi secured their first victory of the season, edging Umm Salal 3-2 in thrilling fashion. The hosts twice came from behind before clinching all three points deep into stoppage time. Goals from Wassim Kadari and Ahmed Moeen cancelled out efforts by Ghanaian forward Michael Baidoo and Moroccan Osama Tanan, setting up a tense finale. It was French midfielder Jordan Marcel Veretout who stole the spotlight, striking in the 99th minute to seal the win. The result lifted Al Arabi to four points after two rounds, placing them seventh in the league standings.
In England, defender Zak Vyner started at right centre-back for Bristol City and played a key role in a dominant 4-2 win over Hull City in the Championship. Despite Hull striking first inside three minutes through Joe Gelhardt, Bristol responded with authority. Emil Riis equalised after neat play from Ross McCrorie, before Anis Mehmeti gave the hosts the lead. Riis then pounced on a defensive error to double his tally before the break, putting Bristol firmly in control. The second half saw Max Bird add a fourth, with Hull grabbing a late consolation in stoppage time. Vyner’s assured display at the back helped Bristol claim their first home win of the season.
Elsewhere in England, Silko Thomas Otieno was an unused substitute as Leicester City defeated Birmingham, while Tyler Onyango did not feature in Everton’s 3-2 victory over Wolves. In Germany, winger Linton Maina missed Cologne’s 4-1 triumph over Freiburg, while in Scotland, Jonah Ayunga started for St Mirren in a 1-1 draw against Hibernian.
In South Africa, goalkeeper Ian Otieno was on the bench as Richards Bay drew 0-0 with Mawele. Meanwhile, Brian Bwire was in action for Polokwane City as they held Marumo Gallants to a 1-1 draw, with Bonginkosi Dlamini’s second-half goal earning the point.
Kenya’s stars abroad continue to build momentum as the international break approaches, offering plenty of encouragement ahead of upcoming national team duties.
