Harambee Stars defender Ismael Athuman Gonzalez has embarked on a new chapter in his career after signing a one-year deal with Spanish third-tier side Zamora CF. The Spain-born Kenyan international joins the club on a free transfer following his departure from AD Mérida in June, where he played a key role in helping the team reach the Second Division promotion play-offs in the 2024-25 season.
The 30-year-old centre back, who can also operate as a right back or defensive midfielder, was officially unveiled by Zamora as they look to strengthen their defensive line ahead of the 2025-26 campaign. The club hailed his experience and versatility, qualities that will be vital as they push for promotion in a highly competitive league.
Athuman’s move to Zamora is his seventh club switch in just five years, underlining his status as one of the most well-travelled Kenyan footballers in Europe. During his brief but impactful stint at Mérida, he made 17 appearances and was widely praised for his composure and tactical discipline at the back.
Prior to joining Mérida in January 2025, Athuman had been without a club since leaving Águilas in mid-2024. This period of inactivity saw his market value drop significantly, from €100,000 to €50,000. However, his solid displays over the last six months reignited interest in his services, ultimately leading to his signing by Zamora.
Athuman brings with him over 1,800 minutes of experience in Spain’s First Division of the RFEF, having previously featured for Sabadell and Mérida. His football journey began in the youth academy of UD Las Palmas, where he developed his skills and eventually earned his senior debut in the Segunda División during the 2020-21 season. He went on to make six appearances for Las Palmas’ first team, gaining exposure at a high level early in his career.
A major highlight in his club career came in the 2021-22 season when he helped Real Murcia secure promotion to the First Division of the RFEF. In addition to Las Palmas, Mérida, and Murcia, Athuman has also played for Fuenlabrada, Granada B, Cacereño, Sabadell, and Águilas, showcasing his adaptability across various systems and divisions.
With a new season ahead, Athuman will be aiming to re-establish himself as a consistent performer and potentially catch the eye of Harambee Stars head coach Benni McCarthy ahead of upcoming international fixtures. His leadership and defensive stability are expected to play a crucial role for Zamora in what promises to be a challenging campaign.
Kenyan supporters fondly recall Athuman’s role in the national team during the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt, Kenya’s last appearance at the prestigious tournament.
