Harambee Stars began their CHAN 2024 campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over two-time champions DR Congo at a packed Kasarani Stadium. It was a disciplined and energetic display that earned Kenya a crucial three points in their Group A opener.
Between the posts, Byrne Omondi impressed with calm decision-making and timely saves, showing why he’s the undisputed number one. Right back Daniel Sakari had a rocky start but recovered well, contributing to the winning goal with a surging run down the flank. Abud Omar held his own on the opposite side, though a risky moment in the disallowed DR Congo goal nearly cost the team.
In central defense, Sylvester Owino was physical and reliable, while Alphonce Omija offered composure and leadership. Manzur Okwaro, deployed in a defensive midfield role, was a revelation, controlling possession and shielding the defense effectively.
Alpha Onyango stood out as the man of the match. He controlled proceedings from midfield, combining tireless defensive work with attacking intent and intelligent distribution. He won five of seven duels and proved why he’s a cornerstone of the team. Austin Odhiambo, the match-winner, grew into the game after a slow start, eventually finding pockets of space and finishing coolly for the decisive goal.
David Sakwa was another standout, offering a constant threat on the left wing and assisting the lone goal with his direct play. Ryan Ogam also had a solid outing, surprising many with his start on the right but linking well with Sakari and Odhiambo.
Masud Juma had a quieter day upfront, holding the ball well but struggling to make an impact before being substituted. The substitutes all contributed positively in their short spells, with Bonface Muchiri and Chris Erambo helping preserve the lead and Ben Stanley Omondi nearly doubling it late on.
With the win secured, Kenya shift focus to their next match against Angola on Thursday, August 7, under the floodlights at Kasarani. A second straight win would virtually guarantee a place in the knockout rounds a remarkable feat considering the team’s disrupted preparations.
