Harambee Stars prospect Zak Vyner played the full 90 minutes as Bristol City extended their unbeaten start to the season with a commanding 2-0 win over League Two side MK Dons in the Carabao Cup first round. The Kenyan defender’s composure and leadership at the back were instrumental in a controlled performance that delivered the Robins’ third consecutive clean sheet of the campaign.
The hosts got off to a dream start, breaking the deadlock just six minutes in. A well-delivered corner from the right found captain Jason Knight, who rose highest to head home. The early strike not only put Bristol City in control but also marked the first goal conceded by MK Dons since April.
While the visitors created some promising moments in the first half, they failed to capitalise. Will Collar came close with a deflected effort and later sent a header over the bar. At the other end, Rob Dickie narrowly missed doubling the lead with a header from a set piece.
The second half brought renewed energy, with Bristol City manager making tactical changes that paid off quickly. Japanese forward Yu Hirakawa, introduced at the break, showcased both skill and precision in the 61st minute. Cushioning a lofted pass, he breezed past the defence before rifling a shot high into the net to make it 2-0.
The Robins nearly extended their advantage moments later when Josh Stokes rattled the crossbar following a driving run from Knight. Midfielder Max Bird also made his return from injury, gaining valuable minutes late in the match.
MK Dons pushed forward in search of a way back, but debutant goalkeeper Joe Lumley was alert throughout, dealing comfortably with their attempts and ensuring Bristol City’s defensive record remained intact.
For Vyner, the match further solidified his growing reputation as a dependable figure at the heart of defence something that could be invaluable for the Harambee Stars heading into future international fixtures. His positioning, timing, and calmness under pressure gave Bristol City a solid foundation to build on.
With momentum on their side, Bristol City will now turn their attention back to league action, aiming to continue their winning run when they face Charlton Athletic on Saturday.
