Harambee Stars players are set to enjoy a financial windfall following their impressive start at the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN). The national team kicked off their Group A campaign with a commanding 2-0 win over DR Congo at Kasarani Stadium, thanks to a goal from Austin Odhiambo just before halftime.
The victory has not only given the team a strong start in the tournament but also guaranteed each player Ksh1 million in prize money. This comes after a promise made by President William Ruto, who pledged that each win would earn the players and technical staff Ksh1 million, while a draw would attract a Ksh500,000 reward.
This reward system means Harambee Stars players stand to make significant amounts if they maintain their winning streak. With three more group matches to play, each player could potentially walk away with Ksh4 million from the group stage alone. Should the team progress to the quarter-finals, an additional Ksh60 million will be shared among the squad, rising to Ksh70 million for reaching the semi-finals. If they go all the way and lift the CHAN 2024 trophy, the team could earn up to Ksh600 million in total from the government.
Further financial incentives have emerged, with a Nairobi-based businessman pledging a separate Ksh400 million bonus should the team win the tournament. These promises have created a major motivational boost for the players, coaching staff, and fans.
Despite the win, the team was not flawless. The Congolese side exposed some vulnerabilities in Kenya’s defense, and improvements will be necessary ahead of their second group match against Angola. With COSAFA champions Angola and two-time CHAN winners Morocco still to come, Harambee Stars must tighten up their game if they hope to continue winning and securing the lucrative bonuses.
All eyes will now be on the government to fulfill the President’s promise and on the team to maintain their momentum in the quest for CHAN glory and financial reward.
