Harry Brook believes the potential absence of Pat Cummins at the start of the Ashes could give England a vital edge, though he cautioned that Australia’s pace depth means any replacement should not be underestimated. With the first Test in Perth just weeks away, Cummins’ recovery from a back stress injury remains uncertain, and reports suggest his participation in the series could be in doubt.
Brook acknowledged the threat Cummins poses, describing him as a world-class bowler who has consistently challenged England’s top order, particularly Joe Root. However, he added that Australia’s pace reserves, including the likes of Scott Boland, are more than capable of stepping up if required. Boland, who boasts exceptional figures on home soil, is the likeliest to fill the void should Cummins miss out.
While Australia monitor their captain’s progress, England have been boosted by the return of Ben Stokes, who is back in full training after recovering from a shoulder injury. Stokes missed the final Test against India but is expected to be fit for the Ashes opener. Brook, recently appointed vice-captain, expressed confidence that Stokes will play the entire five-Test series despite his tendency to push his physical limits.
Brook revealed that his new leadership role came informally, with head coach Brendon McCullum casually informing him of the promotion. Although he admitted he is not actively seeking captaincy duties, Brook said he would be ready to step in if required. He added that part of his responsibility would be managing Stokes’ workload, especially when the captain is tempted to bowl long spells.
Reflecting on his own preparation, Brook said he is determined to stay focused and adapt quickly to Australian conditions, having had limited red-ball experience there. His previous stint in the Big Bash League was disappointing, but he sees the upcoming series as an opportunity to make amends and prove himself in one of cricket’s toughest arenas.
With confidence high in the England camp and key players returning to fitness, Brook is optimistic about the team’s chances of reclaiming the Ashes urn. “I bloody hope so,” he said, underlining the team’s belief that they can overcome any challenge Australia presents — even with or without Pat Cummins leading their attack.
