Former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel has stirred debate among Blues supporters after publicly questioning the club’s decision to sign Liam Delap as their main striker reinforcement. Speaking during DAZN’s coverage of Chelsea’s 2-0 win over Los Angeles FC in their FIFA Club World Cup opener, Mikel expressed skepticism about whether Delap is the kind of player fans had hoped for.
Delap, who joined Chelsea from Ipswich Town for £30 million earlier this summer, made his debut in the match and contributed with an assist, showcasing his energy and ability to get behind defenders. However, Mikel believes that while the young striker had a promising start, Chelsea fans were expecting a more proven goal-scorer.
“We need someone to come in, score goals and finish those chances. Obviously, he [Delap] isn’t the guy the fans wanted. We know who the fans wanted,” Mikel said, referencing Nigerian star Victor Osimhen, who had long been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge. “The fans wanted Victor Osimhen to come to the club but he didn’t. Obviously, the club decided to go with Delap. He is young, he is gonna get better. Hopefully, he hits the ground running and then he is gonna quieten those doubters.”

Osimhen, known for his explosive pace and clinical finishing at Napoli, had been the top choice among many Chelsea fans looking for a marquee signing. But Chelsea opted for a less glamorous, long-term prospect in Delap, hoping his development under new manager Enzo Maresca will pay off.
Despite his reservations, Mikel was not completely dismissive of Delap’s potential. He noted the striker’s positive attributes, including intelligent movement and willingness to take on defenders. “The runs I saw today, running behind defenders, I think he can be the guy to finish those chances,” Mikel added, offering a glimmer of support to the young striker.
Nonetheless, Mikel believes Nicolas Jackson, last season’s leading forward, will remain Chelsea’s main attacking option heading into the new campaign. “Let’s not forget Nic Jackson,” he said. “I still think he will be the main man. He just needs to work on his finishing. If he struggles, Delap gets his opportunity. Healthy competition is really important.”
Chelsea’s next Club World Cup test comes on Friday when they face Brazilian giants Flamengo. With increased scrutiny on Delap and Jackson, all eyes will be on who takes the lead in Chelsea’s evolving forward line.
