Liverpool’s Hugo Ekitike has been severely penalized following his red card in the Carabao Cup match against Southampton, which has seen him incur a two-week salary deduction. The French forward, who had been a standout performer for the Reds, scored the decisive goal in the 85th minute, securing a 2-1 win and a place in the quarter-finals. However, his post-goal celebration cost him dearly, as he received a second yellow card for removing his shirt, an automatic booking offense.
Ekitike had already been cautioned earlier in the match for dissent after deliberately punching the ball away. His decision to celebrate by removing his shirt, forgetting he was on a yellow card, led to his ejection from the match. Consequently, he will be unavailable for Liverpool’s upcoming Premier League match against Crystal Palace.
In response to his thoughtless behavior, Liverpool has decided to fine Ekitike two weeks’ wages, which amounts to €600,000. The 23-year-old, who joined the club from Eintracht Frankfurt for €80 million this summer, earns a weekly salary of €300,000. This fine, while substantial, is seen as a lesson in discipline for the young striker.
Despite his recent disciplinary misstep, Ekitike had been enjoying a promising start to his Liverpool career, having netted five goals in his first eight appearances. However, the timing of his suspension could impact his place in the team, especially with new signing Alexander Isak also now part of the attacking lineup.
Liverpool manager Arne Slot did not mince words when addressing Ekitike’s actions. While acknowledging the player’s excitement after scoring, he expressed frustration at the lack of control in his celebration. Slot stressed the importance of managing emotions and maintaining professionalism, particularly when the result is still uncertain, as in the case of the Carabao Cup match. Vice-captain Andy Robertson also joined in criticizing the reckless act, labeling it as “silly.”
Ekitike has since issued an apology for his actions, acknowledging that his behavior was unnecessary and expressing regret for letting his emotions get the better of him. While the incident has drawn criticism, it serves as a reminder of the importance of discipline, both on and off the pitch.
