Harambee Stars performance analyst, Nick Kimanthi, has expressed his appreciation for working with coach Benni McCarthy, emphasizing the positive impact the renowned tactician has had on the Kenyan national team. Since McCarthy took over as head coach, the team’s performance has noticeably improved, and while McCarthy is largely credited for the success, Kimanthi, as well as other staff members, play a vital role in the team’s development.
Kimanthi, who is also the team manager, handles player performance analysis, focusing on critical metrics such as distance covered, speed, player load, impacts, and heart rate during both training and matches. These data points are used to determine players’ readiness for a full 90 minutes, assess strengths and weaknesses of opponents, and guide match preparations.
With an extensive background in data analysis, including stints in England and Spain and working with FIFA during the 2022 World Cup, Kimanthi joined Harambee Stars in March 2024. His expertise allows him to track player performance through GPS data, which helps assess their physical capabilities and optimize training plans. The data-driven approach has also introduced a culture of accountability among the players. According to Kimanthi, many players, initially unaware of GPS tracking, now embrace the technology. The awareness that their performance is being closely monitored motivates them to push harder and maintain high standards, both in training and match situations.
Kimanthi’s work has transformed the performance culture within the team. Players now seek feedback about their data, eager to know how they are performing and what improvements they can make. This accountability has helped elevate the overall standards of the team. “You can’t rely on personal opinion,” Kimanthi said. “We rely on data, which helps us understand what players can really contribute in training or a match.”
A crucial part of this system is the harmonious relationship between Kimanthi and McCarthy. The coach’s understanding of data and its importance makes working with him a smooth process. Unlike other coaches who may require extensive presentations or explanations, McCarthy knows exactly what data he needs and is always specific about the details. This understanding has been invaluable in driving the team’s performance forward.
As Kimanthi continues his academic journey, pursuing a PhD while holding a Master’s in Sport Performance Analysis, he is excited to see Kenyan football gradually adopting data-driven methods. However, he acknowledges that there is still a long way to go before Kenyan football fully catches up with global standards in this area.
