Gor Mahia defender Alphonce Omija has reflected on his crucial goalline clearance during Harambee Stars’ 1-0 victory over DR Congo in their opening Group A fixture at the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) at Kasarani Stadium.
Omija, who partnered with Sylvester Owino at the heart of defence, played a key role in Kenya’s defensive solidity, contributing timely interventions throughout the match. The defining moment came in the dying minutes, when he stopped what looked like a certain equaliser, preserving Kenya’s narrow lead.
With President William Ruto having pledged Ksh1 million per player for every win and Ksh500,000 for every draw, the result earned the squad Ksh40 million. But for Omija, the significance of his clearance went beyond the monetary reward.
“It was a proud moment for me,” he said. “I felt like the last man standing. Everyone congratulated me, but I did it for the country. That win wasn’t just about us in the dressing room it was for everyone. I think I saved 55 million people,” he joked, referencing Kenya’s population, to the delight of those in attendance.
While Gor Mahia midfielder Austin Odhiambo netted the lone goal, and Alpha Onyango was named Man of the Match, it was Omija’s late intervention that ultimately sealed all three points and kept the clean sheet intact.
Looking ahead to the next game against Angola, Omija insists the hard work is only just beginning. Kenya are aiming for another win when they face Angola at Kasarani, with kick-off scheduled for 7:00 PM on Thursday, August 7.
“We’ve worked on our weak points and also improved on the areas where we performed well. Concentration is everything from back to front,” he said. “Defending is a team effort.”
Omija also acknowledged the opportunity the tournament offers in shaping players’ professional paths. “This is a platform. Everyone wants to show what they can do because you never know who’s watching. Scouts and agents are always around. It’s all about giving 100% and making your chance count.”
