India produced one of the most remarkable performances in Women’s World Cup history, chasing down a record total of 338 to defeat defending champions Australia by five wickets and book their place in Sunday’s final against South Africa.
Jemimah Rodrigues was the star of the show, anchoring India’s innings with a magnificent unbeaten 127. Dropped three times, Rodrigues capitalized on every chance to steer her side home with nine balls to spare. Her composed display under pressure helped India recover from early setbacks after losing both openers inside the powerplay.
Captain Harmanpreet Kaur added a brisk 89 from 89 balls, keeping India within touching distance of the target before falling with 113 runs still needed. Despite a few nervy moments, including Deepti Sharma’s run out and Richa Ghosh’s dismissal after two towering sixes, India remained in control thanks to Rodrigues’ resilience and Amanjot Kaur’s calm finish.
Earlier, Australia had posted a formidable 338, powered by a blistering 77-ball century from Phoebe Litchfield – the fastest in a World Cup knockout match. Ellyse Perry chipped in with a steady half-century, while Ash Gardner’s explosive 41-ball fifty lifted Australia late in the innings. However, a late collapse saw them lose their last four wickets for just 45 runs, giving India a crucial opening.
Rodrigues later revealed the emotional toll of the past year, describing how mental struggles and team selection challenges made the innings deeply personal. “It was not about proving a point,” she said. “It was about taking India through.”
The thrilling victory sends India into their first home World Cup final, sparking celebrations across the country. With Rodrigues in inspired form and the team brimming with belief, the hosts will now turn their focus to Sunday’s showdown with South Africa, hoping to lift their maiden Women’s World Cup trophy.
