AFC Leopards Secretary General aspirant Irene Sitawa Wekesa has laid out an ambitious plan to overhaul the club’s administration, pledging to professionalize internal structures, improve players’ and members’ welfare, and appoint a seasoned CEO if elected.
Wekesa is among the three candidates vying for the SG post, alongside Isaac Mulindi Mulanda and Robert Khamala Situma. The election is slated for Sunday at Kasarani Stadion Hotel Ballroom, where 2,706 members are expected to vote.
At the core of her campaign is a vision to restore AFC Leopards to its former glory. She emphasized that revamping the communication department would be her first priority. According to her, the club has for too long operated inefficiently, with positions filled based on reward rather than merit a practice she intends to end.
“The first assignment is to revamp the administration, including upgrading our communication department by hiring people on merit and not by reward,” she stated. “We should also be able to appoint an experienced Chief Executive Officer as well as target league titles, which have eluded us for more than 25 years.”
Wekesa’s campaign message echoes sentiments shared by Chairman aspirants Boniface Ambani and Enos Mutoka, who have both voiced the need for a leadership team capable of revitalizing the club. Her strategy includes building a professional backroom staff and implementing structures that will attract commercial success while aligning the club’s objectives with modern football demands.
A native of Webuye, Wekesa currently serves as a business development and strategic partnerships officer. She believes her professional background and long-standing involvement with the club place her in a unique position to effect meaningful change. “I have been at Leopards for 15 years, not just as a fan but as a very active member. I’ve worked day and night and been at the forefront in ensuring I offer help to Leopards in the best way I can,” she said.
She adds that her experience in communication development and strategic planning will be a key asset in modernizing the club’s operations. “My current job will soften everything if I become the next SG. It directly aligns with what the club needs strategic planning and sustainable development.”
Wekesa’s appeal lies in her blend of loyalty, professionalism, and vision. Her campaign positions her as a candidate determined to shift the culture at AFC Leopards from politics to performance. With a detailed plan in place and deep roots in the club’s history, she is urging members to look beyond rhetoric and vote for a leadership grounded in experience and action.
