The Norwegian Olympic champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen appeared in court to give his testimony on the final day of the trial involving his father and former coach, Gjert Ingebrigtsen. Jakob, who is known for his achievements in athletics including Olympic gold medals in the 1500m and 5000m events, spoke openly about his experiences of domestic violence within his family.
Jakob described the ordeal as deeply embarrassing, saying, “It is embarrassing to be a victim of domestic violence.” He reflected on the difficulty of confronting and sharing such painful family experiences, explaining that it did not align with the public image people might have of his family. Despite the personal discomfort, he stood by his earlier statements, affirming that he had no reason to lie about the abuse he endured since childhood. He conveyed that the trial had left lasting emotional scars for all involved.
The allegations center on Gjert Ingebrigtsen, who prosecutors accuse of subjecting his children, Jakob and his younger sister Ingrid, to a pattern of physical and verbal abuse. Prosecutors have recommended that Gjert face a prison sentence of two and a half years. According to the charges, Gjert repeatedly hit and verbally humiliated his children over the years.
In contrast, the defense mounted a strong challenge to these claims. Gjert’s lawyer disputed many of the accusations, seeking a full acquittal. One particular point of contention was Jakob’s claim that his father had kicked him in the stomach when he was seven years old after a scooter accident. The defense attorney questioned why Jakob had not reported the incident at the time or shown any physical marks, pointing out that the allegation only arose during police questioning years later. The lawyer also highlighted that Jakob was uncertain about who else was present during the incident, suggesting doubt about the circumstances.
Despite these challenges, the defense did acknowledge that Gjert had occasionally used harsh language, admitting that he called Jakob names such as “stupid,” “terrorist,” and “a thug” during heated family arguments. However, they argued that these insults did not amount to the severe abuse alleged by the prosecution.
Jakob’s sister Ingrid also played a key role in the case. She reportedly left the family home at age 15, citing physical abuse, including an incident where her father allegedly struck her with a wet towel. This testimony added weight to the prosecution’s argument that the children had been subjected to ongoing mistreatment.
Jakob’s legal counsel urged the court to trust the accounts given by Jakob and Ingrid. She emphasized the courage it took for Jakob, as a public figure and sporting superstar, to come forward with his story. She questioned why he would subject himself to intense scrutiny and questioning unless the allegations were true. Similarly, she highlighted Ingrid’s decision to leave the family home and speak openly about her experiences as further evidence of the truth behind the claims.
The trial, which has lasted six weeks, has been emotionally charged and closely followed due to Jakob’s high profile as an athlete. The presiding judge announced that the verdict would be delivered on June 16. This decision will determine the future of Gjert Ingebrigtsen and bring closure to a difficult chapter in the lives of Jakob and his family.
