Kenya Pipeline Company Managing Director Joe Sang is gearing up for the Berlin Marathon next month, with a mission that goes beyond athletics. After successfully completing the Chicago Marathon last year, Sang will now use his second World Marathon Majors appearance to raise funds for children’s education through the Joe Sang Foundation.
The foundation, established last year, has set an ambitious goal of raising 200 million Kenyan shillings within two years. These funds will go towards supporting needy children, offering them access to education and the opportunity to build brighter futures. So far, over 10 million shillings have already been raised, with the target of reaching 100 million shillings by the end of 2025 to support children enrolling in school in early 2026.
As part of his preparation, Sang has intensified his training, recently completing a 30-kilometre long run on the serene roads of Karen at dawn. Surrounded by supportive training partners, he demonstrated the discipline and commitment that have become his trademarks since he took up marathon running. His current goal is to break the three-hour mark in Berlin, having clocked a personal best of 3 hours 7 minutes during his marathon debut in Chicago.
Sang’s athletic journey has also seen him excel in the half marathon, where he recorded a personal best of 1 hour, 32 minutes, and 44 seconds. Running alongside friends and supporters such as John Terer, Emmanuel Cheruiyot, Tony Lel, and Silas Simatwo, Sang has built a community of athletes who are also champions of his charitable vision. Their involvement highlights the collective effort behind his fundraising mission.
Speaking after his training run, Sang emphasized that the Berlin Marathon is not just about breaking personal records, but also about transforming lives. He urged well-wishers and Kenyans from all walks of life to contribute to the Joe Sang Foundation, stressing that even small contributions can change the course of a child’s life. His training partners echoed this sentiment, expressing confidence in his ability to achieve both his athletic and philanthropic goals.
The Berlin Marathon, scheduled for September 21, will serve as a global stage for Sang to showcase both his resilience as a runner and his dedication to social impact. His campaign blends the spirit of sport with the drive to create long-lasting educational opportunities for underprivileged children.
