Kabras Sugar RFC narrowly avoided early elimination from the 2025 Prinsloo 7s and are now set to face KCB in a blockbuster Main Cup quarterfinal clash. The Sugarmen bounced back strongly from a narrow 17-15 defeat to Mwamba RFC, producing a commanding 25-5 win over MMUST to secure their progression into the knockout stages.
Lamec Ambetsa emerged as the hero for Kabras, scoring two crucial tries, including a dazzling solo effort that saw him race nearly the length of the pitch. His performance under pressure showcased the team’s resilience as they avoided an early exit from the tournament held at the Nakuru Athletic Club.
On the other side of the draw, KCB Rugby were in ruthless form. The Bankers obliterated Nondescripts RFC 52-0 in their final pool game to maintain a perfect record on Day One. Floyd Wabwire scored a sensational hat-trick while Vincent Onyala and Festus Shiasi added their names to the scoresheet in a dominant display of sevens rugby.
Kenya Harlequin also impressed, grinding out a 15-12 victory over hosts Nakuru RFC in a tense Pool A finale. Powered by Charles Kinyanjui and Lucky Dewald, the Quins remained unbeaten through the pool stages and are looking like serious contenders as they head into the quarterfinals.
Menengai Oilers had their revenge over Strathmore Leos, claiming a 19-7 win to top Pool B. Denis Abukuse and Daniel Kipchirchir led the charge as the Oilers avenged their previous defeat to the Leos in the last leg, underlining their title credentials.
Despite a gutsy 14-10 win against Mwamba, Impala RFC failed to make the Main Cup quarterfinals due to an earlier draw. They drop into the Challenge Trophy competition alongside teams like Daystar Falcons, Kisumu RFC, and MMUST.
With heavyweights Kabras, KCB, Quins, and Oilers all making it to the quarters, the stage is set for an explosive Day Two in Nakuru. The level of competition and individual brilliance on display has already made the 2025 Prinsloo 7s one of the most thrilling legs in this year’s National 7s Circuit.
