Kaizer Chiefs have made a stunning decision to withdraw from the 2025 Prince Mangosuthu Legacy Cup, leaving the tournament’s organisers scrambling to adjust the schedule just days before kick-off. The club’s announcement has sparked disappointment among fans and stakeholders who were eagerly anticipating their participation in the annual event.
Initially scheduled for October 11, the tournament had already been postponed to November 16 to accommodate Chiefs’ injury concerns and travel arrangements. However, despite the rescheduling, the club confirmed that they would not be taking part due to new commitments in continental competitions.
According to an official statement from the Zululand District Municipality, the club’s chairman cited conflicting obligations in the CAF Confederation Cup group stages as the main reason behind the decision. The revised continental calendar reportedly made it impossible for the team to participate without compromising their preparations and performance at the international level.
Chiefs expressed regret over the decision, noting that it was not made lightly. They emphasised their commitment to representing South African football on the continental stage and prioritising success in CAF tournaments. The move, however, has left fans disheartened, as the Amakhosi’s presence was expected to bring a massive turnout in Ulundi.
In response to the withdrawal, the tournament organisers moved swiftly to ensure that the event continues as planned. Richards Bay FC has been confirmed as Chiefs’ replacement and will now take on Eswatini champions Nsingizini Hotspurs FC in the second semi-final at midday.
The competition will kick off with the opening semi-final between AmaZulu FC and Njampela FC at 9:00 AM, with the winners from both matches meeting in the grand final at 4:00 PM. Organisers have assured fans that despite the last-minute change, the tournament will still deliver top-tier entertainment and uphold the spirit of celebrating the legacy of the late Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi.
While the absence of Kaizer Chiefs is a major blow, the inclusion of Richards Bay FC adds an exciting dynamic to the cup. Fans can still look forward to a thrilling day of football in Ulundi, where pride, legacy, and regional rivalry will take centre stage.
