Kenya’s sporting landscape has received a major boost following the transformation of Kasarani and Nyayo stadiums into world-class football arenas ahead of the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN). After undergoing significant renovations to meet Confederation of African Football (CAF) standards, both venues have now been elevated to Category Four status the highest stadium rating under CAF’s classification system.
This upgrade means the two stadiums are now eligible to host the most prestigious events on the African football calendar. These include the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) semi-finals and finals, CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup semi-finals and finals, and the CAF Super Cup. The elevation firmly places Kenya among the continent’s top-tier football nations in terms of infrastructure.
The improvements began with revamping the pitches. Both venues now boast playing surfaces that meet CAF’s dimensional standards, with modern drainage and sprinkler systems in place. The grass is maintained at the optimal 20 to 30 millimetres, while features like regulation goalposts, player tunnels, and covered benches have been standardized.
Floodlighting at both venues has been upgraded to deliver a minimum of 1200 lux, supported by reliable power backup systems to ensure uninterrupted broadcasting and match operations. Dressing rooms have also been overhauled, with four spacious and well-ventilated changing areas for teams, complete with showers, tactical boards, lockers, and hot and cold water facilities. Officials’ rooms have been similarly upgraded, featuring internet access, match clocks, and full medical kits.
Security, comfort, and functionality have also been enhanced. Dedicated spaces for match-day staff such as ball boys and CAF delegates are now part of the infrastructure. Secure pathways and private entry points further elevate the operational quality of both venues.
This milestone is a significant leap for Kenya’s sporting infrastructure. It not only prepares the country to host CHAN 2024 at the highest level but also lays a strong foundation for upcoming events such as AFCON 2027. Kasarani and Nyayo are no longer just historic grounds they are now powerful symbols of Kenya’s readiness to take centre stage in African and global football.
