The Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, was a cauldron of noise and passion on Sunday evening as Harambee Stars made a triumphant return to continental football with a thrilling 1–0 victory over the Democratic Republic of Congo in their opening match of the 2024 CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN).
The defining moment came just before halftime, when Austin Odhiambo etched his name into national folklore by slotting home the decisive goal. The crowd of thousands erupted in celebration, with millions of Kenyans at home joining in the moment of euphoria that rekindled hopes of a footballing renaissance.
This encounter, the first in Group A, was more than just a match. It was Kenya’s symbolic reawakening on the continental stage. Facing a formidable opponent in DR Congo champions of CHAN in 2009 and 2016 the Stars displayed tactical discipline, resilience, and hunger, sending a strong message to the rest of Africa.
The atmosphere at Kasarani was electric from the first whistle, with chants, flags, and vuvuzelas setting the tone for what turned into a memorable evening. The goal, timed at the dying moments of the first half, shifted the momentum firmly in Kenya’s favor as they took a deserved lead into the break.
Backing from the highest levels of government has added extra motivation to the Stars’ CHAN campaign. President William Ruto pledged Sh1 million per win and Sh500,000 per draw for each player, with a whopping Sh600 million prize if they lift the title — tripling his initial offer. Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko also joined in, promising an additional Sh400 million should the Stars emerge champions, taking the potential reward to a record Sh1 billion.
But beyond the financial incentives, the Stars are playing with heart for redemption, for history, and for national pride. Sunday’s victory is a statement of intent and a reminder that Kenyan football, given the right support and belief, can rise to the occasion on the continental stage.
