As the countdown to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations continues, attention in Kenya is firmly on the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani. The stadium, set to host some of the continent’s biggest matches, is undergoing a major transformation to ensure its pitch meets international standards.
For years, the condition of the Kasarani playing surface has been a point of concern. The grass was often rugged and inconsistent, forcing temporary fixes such as green paint to cover discoloured patches during major matches. However, these cosmetic solutions are now being replaced with a complete overhaul that will see the ground transformed into a world-class pitch worthy of Africa’s premier football tournament.
The main issue lies in the grass composition. Experts have long pointed out that the existing mixture of bermuda and kikuyu grass creates unevenness, affecting both appearance and playability. The new plan is to install a full bermuda grass surface, a type widely recommended for international competitions due to its resilience, smooth texture, and ability to provide a consistent ball roll. This change will bring Kasarani in line with global football requirements and reduce the risk of injuries caused by uneven ground.
But upgrading the turf is only one part of the project. A high-quality pitch also requires modern infrastructure to support it. CAF regulations specify that fields must be smooth, level, and maintained at a height of 20 to 30 millimetres. To meet these standards, Kasarani will be fitted with an advanced sprinkler system to keep the surface moist and a robust drainage system to prevent flooding during heavy rains.
In addition, the pitch will feature a 1.5-metre boundary of natural or artificial grass, along with a designated warm-up area for substitutes. The playing dimensions will also be kept within the required 100–110 metre length and 64–75 metre width. Fortunately, Kasarani already meets most of these benchmarks, making the grass replacement the final crucial step.
Beyond the pitch, the stadium offers modern facilities, including corporate suites, offices, and hospitality areas, ensuring both fans and dignitaries enjoy a first-class experience. The upgrades represent Kenya’s determination to deliver not just an unforgettable footballing spectacle but also a tournament underpinned by world-class infrastructure.
With works set to begin this month, fans can look forward to a fully revamped Kasarani Stadium that will serve as a fitting stage for the continent’s most prestigious football event.
