Kenya is on the cusp of making football history as it prepares to host the African Nations Championship (CHAN) for the first time. With just 20 days remaining until the tournament kicks off, excitement is mounting across the nation. The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has confirmed that the championship will begin on August 3, 2025, with hosts Harambee Stars set to face DR Congo in a highly anticipated opener at the iconic Kasarani Stadium.
FKF President Hussein Mohammed described the moment as monumental for the country, saying, “This will be a historic moment, not just for the team, but for the nation.” The hosting of CHAN is seen as a significant milestone in Kenya’s football development and a chance to showcase its readiness for future international events.
The 2025 CHAN will feature 16 national teams, made up exclusively of players from domestic leagues. This focus on homegrown talent highlights the importance of nurturing local football ecosystems. The tournament, co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania, marks the return of CHAN to East Africa for the first time since Rwanda hosted it in 2016.
Fans have been urged to support the Harambee Stars in large numbers. “Let’s show up for the boys. Let’s fill the stadium, make our voices heard, and give them the support they need from the very first whistle,” added the FKF president. Supporters are encouraged to purchase tickets early and help turn Kasarani into a fortress.
On June 19, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) confirmed that Kasarani Stadium will also host the CHAN final on August 30, 2025. This announcement came after consultations with the three co-hosts and underscores Kenya’s growing stature in African football.
As the countdown continues, all eyes will be on Harambee Stars’ preparations. The opening clash against DR Congo is expected to set the tone for Kenya’s campaign. The tournament represents not only a sporting challenge but also an opportunity for the nation to unite and make a mark on the continental stage.
