The Kenya Lionesses have announced a series of changes to their squad as they prepare for their second fixture in the 2025 Africa Women’s Cup against South Africa. The match, scheduled to kick off at 1:00 PM East Africa Time, will take place at Stade Makis in Antananarivo, Madagascar.
After a convincing 28-5 victory over Madagascar in their opening match, the Lionesses are looking to maintain their momentum. They currently hold second place on the tournament table, with a +23 point difference, as they prepare to face one of their toughest opponents in this round-robin format competition.
One of the key changes to the squad involves the lock position, where Naomi Jelagat steps into the starting lineup to replace Phoebe Akinyi. Akinyi sustained a concussion in the opening game and will sit out the clash against South Africa. Despite this substitution, the rest of the starting forwards remain unchanged, showing confidence in the pack that helped secure the team’s first victory.
The coaching team has also made notable adjustments in the backline. Grace Okulu, known for her attacking creativity and defensive reliability, has been moved to outside center. This positional switch is expected to enhance the team’s ability to break through South Africa’s defensive lines. Taking over the flyhalf role is Moreen Muritu, who will be responsible for dictating the game’s pace and orchestrating offensive plays.
In the midfield, Faith Livoi starts at inside center, providing stability and strong tackling ability. Veteran player Stella Wafula has been shifted to the blindside wing, where her experience and physicality will be instrumental in both attack and defense.
The replacements list also sees a few changes. Mitchell Akinyi joins the squad as a utility forward, filling the gap left by Naomi Jelagat’s promotion to the starting lineup. In the backline, Angel Charity Juma replaces Diana Awino as the utility back. These adjustments reflect a broader strategy by the coaching staff to ensure all traveling players get valuable time on the field, recognizing the hard work and commitment shown throughout the preparation period.
The updated squad aims to build on the positive start to the tournament. With a well-balanced mix of experienced players and emerging talent, the Lionesses are optimistic about their chances against South Africa. Their performance in the opener demonstrated resilience and tactical discipline, which they hope to replicate and improve upon.
The team’s depth is a significant asset as they progress through the tournament. Maintaining player fitness and rotation will be essential, especially given the intensity of the fixtures and the physical demands of the competition.
