Kenya Police FC captain David ‘Cheche’ Ochieng has paid an emotional tribute to the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, describing him as a “true gentleman” and one of the greatest champions of Kenyan sports.
Ochieng, who led Police to their maiden FKF Premier League title earlier this year, recalled the memorable moment when Odinga personally handed the team their championship trophy, saying it was a testament to the late leader’s humility and love for sports. “He was the Gor Mahia patron, but despite being a rival patron, he still congratulated us when we won the title and even handed over the trophy. That showed the kind of leader and gentleman he was,” Ochieng said.
The Police captain revealed that he had met Odinga on several occasions—both during his time with the national team and with his club—and was always struck by his warmth and humility. “I met him three times — twice with the national team and once with Police FC. He was always humble and respectful. He didn’t just support football; he supported rugby, athletics, and many other sports. Kenya has lost a true statesman and a great supporter of our athletes.”
Odinga’s impact on sports stretched far beyond football. Over the years, he was a familiar figure at national tournaments, athletics meets, and rugby matches, often using his platform to advocate for better support for local athletes. His passing has deeply affected the sporting community, which continues to celebrate his immense contributions to the growth of Kenyan sports.
As Kenya Police prepare for their crucial CAF Champions League clash against Sudan’s Al Hilal Omdurman, Ochieng said the team will draw inspiration from Odinga’s legacy. “His passing has been a big emotional boost for us ahead of the match. We’re prepared and will fight to make the country proud. If we win, we’ll dedicate it to our former Prime Minister.”
Odinga’s memorial service will be held at Nyayo Stadium — a venue where he witnessed numerous historic sporting moments — before his burial in his rural home in Bondo, Siaya County. Ochieng expressed that while the nation mourns, it must also celebrate Odinga’s lasting legacy. “We have to celebrate Baba because he gave his all for this country. May his soul rest in peace, and may his family find strength during this difficult time.”
