Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration, Kipchumba Murkomen, has assured both the nation and the international community that the country is fully prepared to host the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), with security measures firmly in place.
Speaking on Monday after inspecting the Nyayo and Kasarani stadiums in Nairobi, Murkomen emphasized that the government has rolled out a comprehensive security plan to ensure the tournament runs smoothly and safely. The tournament, set for August, is expected to attract thousands of visitors, including players, officials, and fans from across the continent.
“We have put in place elaborate measures to ensure visitors are received well at the airport. There will be proper facilitation and screening processes to guarantee safety,” Murkomen stated. He added that the security plan extends beyond stadiums to hotels, major roads, and key tourist sites.
“Visitors will be secured not just in the stadiums, but also in their accommodation facilities and as they tour different parts of the country,” he noted, underscoring the government’s commitment to making CHAN a secure and memorable experience.
To further enhance crowd control and safety, Murkomen revealed that both Nyayo and Kasarani stadiums have been upgraded with modern access gates that require digital entry cards. These systems are aimed at minimizing the risk of overcrowding and potential stampedes.
“We do not expect any stampedes. The entry systems are modern and efficient. We are encouraging all fans to go through the proper channels and ensure they have valid tickets,” he said.
Additionally, both stadiums are now equipped with CCTV surveillance systems to facilitate real-time monitoring and swift security response where needed.
Murkomen also appealed to Kenyans to uphold high standards of hospitality and discipline during the tournament. “Let us be courteous to our guests, help them where needed, and showcase the Kenyan warmth and friendliness,” he urged.
The CHAN tournament will mark a significant milestone for Kenya as it hosts a major continental football event, reflecting its growing reputation as a reliable venue for international sporting competitions.
