Kenya is brimming with excitement as it prepares to host the final of the historic CHAN PAMOJA 2024, a landmark tournament that marks several firsts in African football. Co-hosted with Uganda and Tanzania, this year’s African Nations Championship is set to be the biggest and most prestigious edition yet.
For the first time in the tournament’s history, CHAN is being held across three nations. Matches are scheduled in four vibrant cities: Nairobi, Kampala, Zanzibar, and Dar es Salaam. The tournament officially kicks off on August 2, with Tanzania facing Burkina Faso in the opening match in Dar es Salaam. The grand finale is set for August 30 at the iconic Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani in Nairobi.
This year’s edition is not just about football it’s about rewriting history. The prize money for the winning team has seen a massive 75% increase, rising to an impressive USD 3.5 million. The overall prize pool has also surged by 32%, reaching USD 10.4 million. These figures underscore the rising stature and financial growth of the CHAN tournament, which features only locally-based players representing their national teams.
Adding to the tournament’s prestige is a newly unveiled trophy that symbolizes unity and African pride. With 54 engraved lines representing all CAF member countries and a map of Africa at its core, the gold and silver trophy reflects both diversity and progress on the continent.
All eyes are on Kenya’s Harambee Stars, who will open their campaign on August 3 against two-time champions DR Congo. Grouped in the highly competitive “Group of Death,” Kenya will face stiff opposition from Morocco, Angola, Zambia, and DR Congo. However, playing on home soil could provide a crucial advantage for the national side.
Beyond the football, the month-long tournament is expected to celebrate African culture, youth talent, and regional unity. The third-place playoff will take place in Kampala on August 29, with Nairobi hosting the much-anticipated final a day later.
CHAN PAMOJA 2024 is more than just a championship it’s a powerful celebration of African identity, talent, and potential. The continent is ready, and so is Kenya. Let the games begin!
