Kenya’s U17 national team produced a spirited comeback to claim a crucial 2-1 victory over Rwanda in the CECAFA U17 AFCON qualifiers in Ethiopia. The win lifts the Junior Stars to four points from their opening two matches, keeping their dream of reaching the 2025 AFCON U17 tournament firmly on track. They now sit second in the group behind hosts Ethiopia ahead of their next fixture against South Sudan on Monday.
The match began with both teams struggling to establish rhythm. The opening exchanges were marked by numerous fouls and broken play, preventing either side from creating sustained attacking momentum. Kenya suffered a scare in the 27th minute when their goalkeeper required treatment after a heavy collision during a 50-50 challenge, halting play briefly.
Rwanda eventually found their breakthrough in the 35th minute from a swift counterattack. Daniel Mugunga split open Kenya’s defence with an incisive pass to the overlapping Kandu Gustave, who surged towards the byline before cutting the ball back into the box. Oliver Nshimiyimana arrived unmarked to slot home and give Rwanda a 1-0 lead.
Kenya returned from the break with renewed urgency. Coach William Muluya made an inspired tactical adjustment by introducing Nicholas Ocholla, a move that breathed new life into the attack. The Junior Stars began to dominate possession, pushing Rwanda deeper into their own half.
Their persistence paid off when Armstrong Omondi worked a dangerous ball into the box, forcing a defensive ricochet. Ocholla reacted quickest, pouncing on the loose ball to level the score and spark Kenyan belief.
Buoyed by the equaliser, Kenya continued to press with intensity. Their efforts were rewarded in the 77th minute when Ocholla turned provider, bursting down the right flank before delivering a precise low cross. Trevor Nasasiro timed his run perfectly and guided the ball home, completing the comeback and sending the Kenyan bench into jubilant celebration.
Kenya nearly added a third late on when Julius Buong launched a rapid counterattack, combining with Nathan Achola to set up Omondi. However, the midfielder fired over from close range, missing the chance to put the game beyond reach.
The Junior Stars ultimately held on for a deserved victory, showcasing resilience, tactical discipline, and attacking flair. The win places them in a strong position as they continue their quest for AFCON U17 qualification.
