The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has unveiled the full list of 70 match officials selected to oversee the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), set to run from 2–30 August 2025 in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. This prestigious tournament will feature 26 referees, 26 assistant referees, and 18 Video Match Officials (VMOs) drawn from over 30 CAF Member Associations.
Kenya will be represented by Nyagrowa Dickens Mimisa (referee), Mwangi Samuel Kuria (assistant referee), and Stephen Yiembe (Video Match Official), marking a significant milestone for the country’s officiating standards. CAF continues to emphasize a balance of experience and emerging talent while promoting gender inclusivity in officiating. Several women referees and assistants are included, with Morocco’s Bouchra Karboubi and Uganda’s Shamirah Nabadda among the headline names. Diana Chikotesha from Zambia and Cameroon’s Atezambong Fomo Carine are also part of the assistant referees, bringing valuable expertise.
The tournament will see top referees from across Africa, including Ahmed Nagy Mosa Mahmoud (Egypt), Jammeh Lamin N. (Gambia), Ahmed Arajiga (Tanzania), and Jelly Chavani (South Africa). Notably, the list of VMOs features experienced names such as Mahmoud Ashour (Egypt), Ghorbal Mustapha (Algeria), and Samir Guezzaz (Morocco), reinforcing CAF’s commitment to the use of advanced technology like VAR for critical decision-making.
In preparation for the tournament, all match officials will attend a comprehensive pre-tournament workshop. This program will cover both theoretical and practical sessions to ensure uniformity in officiating standards. Training will also focus on the use of video assistant referee technology, which has become central to CAF competitions.
The 2024 CHAN tournament promises to be a major event for East Africa, with matches set to be played in Nairobi, Dar es Salaam, and Kampala. The competition will kick off on 2 August 2025 and conclude with the final on 30 August. As hosts, Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda are expected to benefit from the spotlight on African football and the opportunity to showcase their infrastructure and organizational capabilities.
The selection of referees like Mimisa, Kuria, and Yiembe underscores the rising profile of Kenyan officials on the continental stage. CAF’s meticulous approach in appointing these officials highlights its continued investment in excellence, fairness, and professionalism, ensuring the tournament is conducted at the highest level.
