Nairobi United left-back Kevin Otiende has expressed his excitement after earning his first call-up to the Harambee Stars, citing the opportunity to reunite with former teammate Ryan Ogam as an extra special motivation.
The young defender was one of three late additions to the national team squad for the upcoming friendlies against Equatorial Guinea and Senegal in Turkey. For Otiende, this marks a significant milestone in his football career, having progressed through Kenya’s youth system from the Under-17 level without previously earning a senior call-up.
“I feel so good, and this is something I’m very excited about. I thank God for it… I also appreciate my teammates and the whole technical bench because without them, I could not be here. It feels great to be reunited with Ryan Ogam, and I would just say it’s God’s timing and hard work,” Otiende said.
Otiende and Ogam previously played together at Rainbow FC, where they formed an integral part of the team’s defensive and midfield structure. While Ogam transitioned from midfield to become a prolific striker, Otiende remained a reliable presence at left-back. Their reunion in the national team adds a familiar dynamic to Harambee Stars’ squad ahead of challenging international fixtures.
The defender shared that he was initially overwhelmed by the news of his selection. After years of representing Kenya at youth levels and hoping for senior recognition, the call-up represents a proud and emotional achievement.
“I’m going to give my all, and I want to add my value there… This is my first call-up, and when I saw it, I could not believe it. From the Under-17 to all those call-ups, I never received anything, but now in the senior category, I’m happy to finally get my call-up,” he added.
Otiende is determined to make a meaningful impact on the Harambee Stars squad, bringing energy, commitment, and a desire to prove himself at the senior international level.
The Harambee Stars squad also features notable inclusions from other top Kenyan clubs, further strengthening the team ahead of the November international friendlies. For Otiende, the focus is now on contributing to the national team and building on his early career achievements.
