Kibera Soccer Women made history on Saturday, clinching their first-ever major trophy with a dramatic 1-0 victory over Vihiga Queens in the 2025 FKF Women’s Cup final at Afraha Stadium in Nakuru.
In a highly competitive and nerve-wracking encounter, it was substitute Stella Adhiambo who stepped up in the dying moments of the game to secure the win. Deep into stoppage time, Adhiambo capitalized on a loose ball inside the penalty box, calmly finishing off a precise cross from Faith Mboya. The Vihiga defense failed to clear their lines, and Adhiambo’s clinical finish sealed a historic victory for Kibera.
The win marked a significant milestone for Kibera, who had previously battled through a tough route to reach the final, overcoming the defending champions, Ulinzi Starlets, and league winners, Kenya Police Bullets, on their way. The emotional triumph brought the team’s hard work and resilience to fruition, as they celebrated their maiden FKF Women’s Cup title.
Kibera’s goalkeeper, Vivian Shiyonzo, was outstanding throughout the tournament, earning the 2025 FKF Women’s Cup Golden Glove award for her impressive performances between the sticks. Despite the team’s defensive efforts, Vihiga Queens’ Diana Cherono stole the individual spotlight with a commanding display of scoring throughout the competition, claiming the Golden Boot as the top scorer of the tournament.
Kibera’s head coach, David Vijago, reflected on the hard-fought final and the team’s unexpected success. “It was a game of chances and luck. We wanted to win the league, but we finished third. Our focus was on the cup, and it all came down to the commitment of the players. We didn’t play our best today, but sometimes luck is on your side,” Vijago remarked after the match.
In recognition of their triumph, Kibera Soccer Women were awarded a cash prize of KSh 650,000 during the post-match ceremony, which was attended by Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Hussein Mohammed and other dignitaries.
The win not only cemented Kibera’s place in Kenyan football history but also highlighted the team’s determination, resilience, and ability to rise to the occasion when it mattered most. The 2025 FKF Women’s Cup will forever be a cherished memory for Kibera Soccer Women and their loyal supporters.
