Louis Rees-Zammit has completed his highly anticipated return to rugby after signing for Bristol Bears, ending his brief pursuit of a career in American football. The 24-year-old Welsh winger, capped 32 times for his country, left rugby in January 2024 to join the NFL’s international player pathway program. He trained and trialled with the Kansas City Chiefs and later the Jacksonville Jaguars but was unable to secure a regular roster spot.
Eager to reignite his rugby career, Rees-Zammit chose Bristol as his new home, describing the move as an easy decision. He expressed his excitement at joining a club whose playing style aligns with his own attacking instincts. “I want to get fans out of their seats, create exciting moments, and help people fall in love with the game again,” he said.
Rees-Zammit first made his mark with Gloucester, scoring 42 tries in 77 appearances and quickly becoming one of the most exciting wingers in the Premiership. On the international stage, he has crossed the try line 14 times for Wales, earning a reputation for blistering pace, sharp footwork, and an eye for the spectacular.
Bristol’s director of rugby, Pat Lam, hailed the signing as a major boost for the club. He praised Rees-Zammit’s drive, ambition, and ability to perform on the biggest stage, believing he has the potential to be one of the best back-three players in the world. Lam also highlighted how the winger’s attacking flair fits perfectly with Bristol’s expansive style of play.
The signing is seen as a statement of intent from Bristol, who are looking to challenge at the highest level in the coming season. At just 24, Rees-Zammit still has his best years ahead of him, and his mix of raw speed, athleticism, and professional experience in two sports could make him a game-changer in the Premiership.
Rees-Zammit will link up with his new teammates immediately, joining the squad in training from tomorrow. Bristol’s first competitive fixture of the new campaign will be against Sale in the Premiership Rugby Cup on 13 September, giving fans an early chance to see their marquee signing back in action.
His return marks the beginning of a new chapter one that promises fast-paced rugby, thrilling counterattacks, and plenty of moments to remind the sport why Louis Rees-Zammit remains one of its most electrifying talents.
