Manchester City have completed the signing of Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma from Paris Saint-Germain in a deal worth around £30 million (€35m). The move marks the end of an era at the Etihad as long-serving Brazilian shot-stopper Ederson leaves for Turkish giants Fenerbahce in a £12.1m (€14m) transfer.
Donnarumma, 26, arrives in Manchester after being deemed surplus to requirements in Paris. PSG recently brought in Lucas Chevalier to become their new first-choice goalkeeper, opening the door for City to swoop for the Italy international. Donnarumma is expected to immediately assume the No 1 role under Pep Guardiola despite the club having invested £27m in James Trafford earlier in the summer.
Trafford, who joined from Burnley in July, briefly displaced Ederson but has struggled to cement his place after a shaky start, most notably being at fault for a goal in City’s recent 2-0 defeat to Tottenham. Guardiola has now turned to Donnarumma for greater stability as the club looks to maintain its dominance in English football and mount another serious Champions League challenge.
The signing makes Donnarumma City’s fifth high-profile addition of the transfer window, joining Tijjani Reijnders, Rayan Cherki, Rayan Aït-Nouri, and Trafford.
For Ederson, the switch to Fenerbahce ends an illustrious eight-year spell at City. Since arriving from Benfica in 2017 for £34.9m, the 32-year-old has been a cornerstone of Guardiola’s side, winning six Premier League titles, two FA Cups, four League Cups, and most memorably, the 2022-23 treble that included the Champions League. His departure, while expected, still represents a significant moment in the club’s modern history.
Meanwhile, City defender Manuel Akanji has completed a loan move to Inter Milan. The Swiss international joins on a season-long deal for a €2m fee, with an option for Inter to buy him permanently next summer for €15m.
Midfielder Kalvin Phillips, however, remains at City despite strong interest during the transfer window. Recovering from achilles surgery in May, the 29-year-old has failed to secure a move and will stay to fight for his place. Since his £45m arrival in 2022, Phillips has struggled for minutes and spent last season on loan at Ipswich.
With Donnarumma’s arrival, Manchester City’s goalkeeping department enters a new chapter, as Guardiola looks to refresh his squad while maintaining the high standards that have defined the club’s recent success.
