Manchester United have sparked tensions with Premier League rivals Newcastle United after launching a surprise attempt to sign RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko.
The 22-year-old Slovenian international, valued at £70 million, had been in advanced discussions with Newcastle, who were optimistic about reaching a verbal agreement. However, Manchester United have now entered the race, initiating their own talks with Sesko’s representatives. The final decision on his next destination now lies with the player and his agents.
Sesko joined Leipzig from RB Salzburg in 2023 and has since made 87 appearances, including in the Champions League. He has become a key figure for both club and country, earning 41 international caps for Slovenia. His impressive performances have made him a sought-after prospect in the summer transfer market.
This unexpected move by United comes just after they strengthened their attack with the signings of Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, spending a combined £133.5 million. Despite these additions, they appear keen to further bolster their forward line by snapping up one of Europe’s most promising young strikers.
Newcastle’s interest in Sesko was largely motivated by the uncertainty surrounding Alexander Isak’s future. Isak, who has reportedly been offered a lucrative £32 million-a-year deal from Saudi Arabia, is believed to prefer a move to Liverpool. Though Newcastle initially rejected a £120 million offer from Liverpool, there are growing indications that Isak could submit a formal transfer request to force a move.
His absence from Newcastle’s pre-season tour, officially due to a minor thigh injury, has only intensified speculation about his departure. With that in mind, Newcastle have been proactive in identifying a replacement, with Sesko emerging as their top target. Manchester United’s intervention, however, could derail those plans.
Sesko gained international recognition after his impressive showing at the European Championships, catching the eye with his pace, strength, and long-range shooting ability. While his qualities make him a compelling prospect, questions remain over whether he fits United’s playing style. His tendency to rely on open space during transitions could limit his impact against teams that sit deep.
