Manchester United legend Edwin van der Sar has publicly called on current manager Ruben Amorim to give Antony another chance at Old Trafford. The Brazilian winger, who was once one of Erik ten Hag’s marquee signings, has shown signs of rediscovering his form following a successful loan stint at Real Betis.
Antony joined United from Ajax in 2022 in a deal worth £86 million, amid great excitement and expectations. However, the Brazilian struggled to find consistent form in the Premier League. In 96 appearances, he managed just 12 goals and five assists, falling short of the impact many had anticipated. Beyond the pitch, his tenure at Manchester United was marred by personal turmoil, including allegations of domestic abuse made against him in 2023. During that time, Antony admitted to considering retirement due to the mounting pressure and emotional toll.
By January 2025, with opportunities drying up under both Ten Hag and Amorim, the club decided to send him out on loan to Real Betis. The move, initially seen as a step backwards, became a career lifeline for the 24-year-old. At Betis, Antony regained his confidence and form, scoring 14 goals in 26 appearances. His revitalized performances were instrumental in helping the club secure a top-four finish in La Liga, and he even earned a recall to the Brazil national team.
Van der Sar believes Antony’s resurgence in Spain should not be ignored. He has urged Amorim and the club’s leadership to reconsider their stance on the winger’s future. According to the former goalkeeper, Antony’s improved maturity and performance warrant another look.
The Dutch legend highlighted the club’s recent transfer business and progress, stating that with the right blend of youth and experience, Manchester United can return to competing at the highest level. He suggested that even if the club were to lose a promising talent like Alejandro Garnacho, recalling Antony could offer a ready-made solution.
However, a return to Old Trafford remains uncertain. Antony has previously described his time at Manchester United as one of the most challenging periods of his life. In past interviews, he has been candid about his struggles with self-belief and mental health during his spell at the club, explaining how he often felt hopeless despite giving his all on the field.
With three years left on his contract but limited prospects under Amorim’s current plans, Antony’s future seems poised for a fresh chapter. Whether Manchester United heed Van der Sar’s call or decide to move on from the costly winger remains to be seen.
