Manchester United have made initial contact in a potential move for Swedish striker Viktor Gyokeres, as they look to bolster their attacking options ahead of the new season. The 26-year-old forward has become one of the most sought-after players in the transfer market, following an impressive campaign with Portuguese side Sporting CP.
Gyokeres recently turned down a lucrative offer from Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal, reportedly worth €35 million plus bonuses, signaling his preference to remain in European football and test himself at the highest level. His rejection of the Middle Eastern offer has opened the door for a number of top European clubs, including Manchester United, who are now exploring the possibility of a transfer.
While no official bid has been submitted, early discussions have been held with intermediaries, laying the groundwork for what could be a blockbuster move. However, there are significant financial and tactical hurdles to overcome before any deal can materialize. One major issue is United’s current attacking setup, which includes the likes of Alejandro Garnacho, Jadon Sancho, and Marcus Rashford. In order to accommodate Gyokeres, the club may be forced to offload at least one of these players, if not more.
At Sporting, Gyokeres has enjoyed a prolific spell, becoming a key figure in their attacking lineup. His form has naturally attracted interest from other elite clubs, with Juventus and Arsenal also linked with the forward. However, Arsenal appear to be prioritizing a move for RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko, which could give United a clearer path should they choose to pursue Gyokeres aggressively.
Sporting, meanwhile, are yet to receive any formal offers for the striker. Discussions between the club’s hierarchy and the player earlier in the season touched on his future, but no definitive asking price was set. While his release clause stands at €100 million, the Portuguese club is believed to be open to negotiations for a lower fee, depending on the circumstances and the buying club’s proposal.
Gyokeres, for his part, is said to be eager to join a Champions League-caliber team. That ambition could be a key factor in his decision-making process, and Manchester United will need to present a convincing sporting project if they are to win the race for his signature.
