England goalkeeper Mary Earps has opened up about the emotional journey that led to her shock retirement from international football. In her autobiography, she recounts the personal struggles, difficult conversations, and moral dilemmas that culminated in her decision to walk away from the national team.
Earps describes England as a “safe space” built on shared values and professionalism, where trust and respect once flourished. However, that harmony began to fracture in 2023 when manager Sarina Wiegman discussed recalling Hannah Hampton to the squad despite previous concerns over her conduct. Earps expressed her discomfort, believing the move could harm the team’s morale and reward negative behaviour.
Months later, Earps was left stunned when she was told another goalkeeper would start in her place. The decision, she says, went against her principles and left her sleepless with frustration. Despite her loyalty and service to the team, she felt her confidence erode as trust between her and Wiegman diminished.
By April 2025, Earps attended what she knew would be her final England camp. During a tense meeting with Wiegman and goalkeeping coach Darren Ward, she was informed that Hampton would take over as England’s No 1. Earps says she felt both devastated and relieved to finally have clarity. She responded by announcing her retirement from international duty, telling Wiegman: “It doesn’t align with my morals and values to continue.”
Though Wiegman initially tried to persuade her to stay, Earps felt that the coach’s words no longer matched her actions. Even after agreeing briefly to continue, she quickly realised the decision was wrong for her mental well-being and integrity. In a final call, she reaffirmed her retirement, ending her England career on her own terms.
Reflecting on her journey, Earps said that the experience had taught her strength and self-respect. Once regarded as England’s invincible goalkeeper, she left the game’s highest stage with dignity intact, proving that walking away can sometimes be the bravest save of all.
