Mason Mount has reaffirmed Manchester United’s ambition to return to European football following one of the club’s worst seasons in modern history.
The midfielder, who joined United from Chelsea in 2023, emphasized that securing a place in continental competition is the primary goal heading into the new campaign. He acknowledged that while the Champions League remains the ultimate prize, any form of European football is vital to restoring the club’s prestige.
“Europe is massively important for us,” said Mount during United’s pre-season preparations in the United States. “The Champions League would be amazing, and as a group, we want to be playing in that competition. But I’d say Europe in general is the focus.”
Manchester United finished 15th in the Premier League last season, their lowest position in decades. Combined with a defeat in the Europa League final against Tottenham Hotspur, the club has now missed out on European football for just the second time since the 1980s. The only other occurrence was in the 2014-15 season.

In response to the disappointment, United have moved swiftly to rebuild under new manager Ruben Amorim. The club has already invested over £125 million in the transfer market, targeting reinforcements for the attacking department. Brazilian forward Matheus Cunha arrived from Wolves, while Bryan Mbeumo was signed from Brentford.
Transfer speculation continues to swirl around the squad. Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins and Chelsea’s Nicolas Jackson have been linked to the club, and there are whispers of a possible swap deal involving Alejandro Garnacho, although those claims have been downplayed internally. Meanwhile, Real Betis are reportedly interested in re-signing Antony after his loan spell, and Juventus continue to monitor Jadon Sancho.
While some players are on tour in the U.S., including fixtures against West Ham, Bournemouth, and Everton, others like Garnacho, Sancho, Antony, and Tyrell Malacia remain at Carrington.
Mount, who endured an injury-hit debut season, is expected to take on greater responsibility both on and off the pitch. His recent comments capture the urgency and determination within the camp to restore Manchester United’s place among Europe’s elite.
“Playing on the European stage is where Manchester United belongs,” Mount said. “We’re determined to make that happen again.”
