Masoud Juma has been named in Kenya’s final 25-man squad for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), marking a significant inclusion ahead of the country’s debut in the competition. The experienced forward recently signed with a National Super League (NSL) club, making him eligible for the tournament, which only allows players active in their domestic leagues.
Juma’s presence is expected to bring valuable experience and composure to the attacking line, especially as Kenya prepares to face a difficult Group A lineup. Veteran goalkeeper Byrne Omondi has also made a return to the national setup and joins Faruk Shikhalo and Sebastian Wekesa in the goalkeeping department, giving the squad a blend of maturity and depth in goal.
In defense, captain Abud Omar will lead a backline filled with seasoned campaigners such as Siraj Mohammed, Alphonce Omija, Sylvester Owino, Michael Kibwage, and Daniel Sakari. These stalwarts will be joined by promising talents from Kenya’s AFCON U20 team, including Manzur Suleiman, Swaleh Pamba, Kevin Okumu, and Lewis Bandi.
The midfield is packed with creativity and work rate, featuring the likes of Alpha Onyango, Austin Odhiambo, Brian Musa, Ben Stanley, and Marvin Nabwire. These players offer a balanced combination of flair and grit that will be crucial in navigating the highly competitive group.
Alongside Juma in the attacking third are Mohammed Bajaber, Boniface Muchiri, and Ryan Ogam. The squad also welcomes fresh faces in David Sakwa, Austin Odongo, and Felix Oluoch, all of whom are set to make their senior national team debuts.
Abud Omar will serve as team captain, with Daniel Sakari and Alphonce Omija named as vice-captains. The Harambee Stars’ Group A fixtures will be played at Moi International Sports Center, Kasarani, starting with a clash against DR Congo on August 3. Other opponents include Angola, Morocco, and Zambia in what has been dubbed the “Group of Death.”
Despite the tough opposition, Kenya will be hoping to make the most of their home advantage, backed by local fans, as they aim to make history in their first CHAN appearance.
