Gambia head coach Johnathan McKinstry has spoken highly of Benni McCarthy despite masterminding a 3-1 victory over Harambee Stars in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier clash at Kasarani.
Kenya and Gambia had shared the spoils in a thrilling 3-3 draw during the first leg in Abidjan, but McKinstry’s side returned stronger for the return fixture, securing an important away win. Despite that triumph, the Northern Irish tactician shifted focus to Kenya’s future under McCarthy, insisting that the South African remains the right figure to steer the national team forward.
McKinstry reflected on his own stint in Kenyan football, where he managed Gor Mahia, pointing out that the national team then lacked proper direction. He contrasted that period with the present, stressing that Harambee Stars are finally moving on the right track with McCarthy at the helm.

According to him, the former Manchester United attacking coach carries the experience and pedigree needed to raise Kenya’s game. He urged the Football Kenya Federation and stakeholders to offer unwavering support to McCarthy, rather than rushing into another change that could destabilize the progress already made.
“Kenya has exactly the right coach right now,” McKinstry stated, while calling on Kenyans to trust the process. He emphasized that McCarthy brings valuable experience, having worked both at club and international levels, and that his leadership could be transformative if given sufficient time.
The Gambia coach also dismissed speculation about his own coaching ambitions with Harambee Stars. While many expected him to show interest, he instead chose to throw his full weight behind McCarthy, encouraging Kenyans to rally behind the current manager.
McKinstry concluded by suggesting continuity as the most important factor for Kenya’s football future. He urged decision-makers to “stick with the current guy for as long as you can,” believing that patience and support will eventually deliver results.
His remarks come at a delicate moment for Harambee Stars, who are under pressure following the loss to Gambia. Yet his endorsement provides reassurance that Kenya’s rebuilding project under Benni McCarthy could bear fruit if allowed time to mature.
