Menengai Oilers will field a youthful squad in the upcoming National Sevens Circuit, aiming to make a strong impact when the series kicks off with the Driftwood Sevens in Mombasa on July 26-27. The 2022 champions are embracing a new approach this season by giving their younger players a chance to gain top-level experience in sevens rugby.
According to the technical bench, the decision to inject fresh talent into the team is part of a long-term strategy to build depth and competitiveness. Among the rising stars set to feature are Kenya Under-20 standouts Daniel Kipchirchir, Brian Achacha, Wilson Tonya, Justus Lunale, and Benedict Muiruri, all of whom impressed during the Barthes Cup in Zimbabwe earlier this year. These promising players will join forces with seasoned campaigners, including Kenya Sevens international Dennis Abukuse, to provide balance and experience in the squad.
The youthful team has been in training for the past two months and is confident about challenging established sides such as defending champions Quins, as well as KCB and Kabras. While the Oilers have not played any build-up tournaments, the technical team believes the squad is well-prepared, having focused on sharpening its structures and adding tactical tweaks to improve performance.
Last season, the Oilers finished fourth overall with 83 points but failed to win a single tournament, a situation they are determined to improve this time around. Consistency will be key for the Nakuru-based side as they target main cup quarterfinal appearances across the six legs of the series.
The new coaching setup has also played a significant role in shaping the team’s direction. With head coach Gibson Weru shifting focus to the Kenya Cup preparations scheduled for November, newly appointed Sevens coach Geoffrey Ominde will take charge during the circuit. Ominde, a former fly-half who represented both Kenya Simbas and Morans, has expressed confidence in his ability to lead the team and leverage his experience to bring success.
He anticipates a highly competitive series, noting that all teams have strengthened during the preseason. “There are no easy games in this circuit, and we are ready for any challenge that comes our way,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Driftwood Sevens tournament has secured a major boost after Kenya Breweries announced a sponsorship package worth Sh3 million, enhancing preparations for what promises to be an exciting opening leg of the series.
