Mercy Cherono has opened up about her difficult 2025 season, confirming that she will be transitioning from track competitions to road running as she works through her recovery from a hamstring injury. The former world silver medallist revealed that the year had been one of her most challenging yet, marked by inconsistent performances and physical setbacks that hindered her progress.
Cherono began her season at the national cross-country championships, where she finished seventh in the women’s 2km race. She then competed in the 6th Athletics Kenya weekend meet, securing second place in the 5000m before heading to the Kip Keino Classic, where she placed fifth in the same event. Her first attempt at a road race came at the Boston 5K, where she crossed the finish line in 11th position.
Despite her efforts, Cherono’s hopes of making the national team for the World Championships in Tokyo came to an end after finishing fifth at the Kenyan Championships, bringing her season to an early close. Reflecting on her performance throughout the year, she acknowledged that she fell short of her expectations and did not achieve the consistency she had aimed for.
However, Cherono highlighted that the season was not without positives. She noted that recent training sessions have shown promise, giving her confidence that she is heading in the right direction. She described 2025 as a learning curve and expressed optimism that the lessons gained will contribute to better performances in future competitions.
Cherono revealed that her initial plans for the year were disrupted by a hamstring injury suffered shortly after the cross-country season. The setback affected her ability to compete regularly, but she noted that her rehabilitation is progressing well. She said she now feels much better, can move without discomfort, and has resumed structured training as she prepares for her next phase.
The long-distance specialist is now fully focused on transitioning to road running, a path she believes will offer new opportunities. She expressed excitement about upcoming road races and confidence that her improved fitness and recovery will support a strong return.
Despite the challenges she faced in 2025, Cherono remains hopeful and determined. Her recovery progress and renewed energy have set the stage for what she believes will be a successful shift to road racing in the months ahead.
