Harambee Stars defender Michael Kibwage has opened up on why he chose to sign for Gor Mahia instead of extending his stay at Tusker FC, citing the club’s passionate fanbase and pressure-filled atmosphere as his biggest motivations.
Kibwage was among the standout performers during the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN 2024), where Harambee Stars enjoyed a memorable run. His performances did not go unnoticed, and several clubs came calling, but it was Gor Mahia’s stature and strong following that swayed his decision.
The former Tusker, AFC Leopards, and KCB defender explained that after spending over two years with the Brewers, he felt it was time for a fresh challenge. While Tusker provided a competitive environment, Kibwage revealed he was yearning for something bigger an atmosphere where playing under pressure would sharpen his abilities further.
“I have been at different clubs and every team had ambitions, but Gor Mahia represents another step for me,” he said. “I needed a new environment where I can push myself harder, and Gor Mahia’s fanbase creates that kind of pressure. Playing in front of thousands of passionate supporters motivates me to give more.”
Kibwage added that competing in front of full stadiums during CHAN gave him a taste of what it means to handle pressure at the highest level. Experiencing Kasarani Stadium packed with Harambee Stars supporters showed him the value of thriving under such conditions. Moving to Gor Mahia, he believes, will help him replicate that feeling on a regular basis.
The defender also linked his decision to his aspirations of cementing a long-term place in the national team. According to him, consistent exposure to high-pressure games at club level is the best preparation for international duty.
“I want to maintain my spot in the national team, and that requires me to play in pressure situations regularly. Gor Mahia provides that environment, and I believe it will help me grow as a player while keeping me competitive at the international stage.”
Kibwage spent two-and-a-half seasons at Tusker, helping them fight for titles, but chose not to renew his contract when it expired at the end of last season. Now at Gor Mahia, he is ready for a new chapter in his career, fueled by ambition, pressure, and the desire to perform in front of the club’s ever-demanding fanbase.
