Harambee Stars captain Michael Olunga has rediscovered his scoring form at just the right time, netting in consecutive matches for his Qatar Stars League side Al-Arabi. Despite being left out of the latest Harambee Stars squad by head coach Benni McCarthy, Olunga has shown why he remains Kenya’s most dependable striker.
Olunga was surprisingly omitted from the national team set to face Madagascar and Comoros in international friendlies this month, as McCarthy chose to experiment with younger forwards in preparation for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations. However, the experienced striker has made a powerful statement with his performances at club level.
After finding the back of the net in Al-Arabi’s 3-1 win over Al-Sadd last weekend, Olunga continued his fine form by scoring in a 2-0 victory against Al-Shahania SC. Following a goalless first half, Yazan Al-Naimat broke the deadlock for Al-Arabi before Olunga sealed the points with a stunning strike.
The 31-year-old forward showcased his trademark composure and precision, curling in a beautiful shot from the edge of the box into the top corner with his stronger left foot. It was a goal that underlined his confidence and finishing prowess, qualities that have made him one of Africa’s most consistent goal scorers in recent years.
This latest goal was Olunga’s fourth in six league matches, signaling a timely return to form as Al-Arabi aim to challenge for the league title. Since joining the club from Al Duhail in May, Olunga has gradually adapted to his new surroundings and is now hitting his stride.
While the October international break did not go as planned—failing to score in Kenya’s World Cup qualifying matches against Burundi and Ivory Coast—Olunga remains optimistic about his international future. He has expressed admiration for coach McCarthy, noting that playing under a legend who was South Africa’s all-time top scorer motivates him to chase Kenya’s scoring record.
Olunga’s resurgence is a positive sign for both club and country. With his determination and leadership, he is poised to play a crucial role when Harambee Stars resume their competitive fixtures, as he continues his pursuit of becoming Kenya’s all-time leading goal scorer.
