Harambee Stars are enjoying a remarkable financial windfall thanks to their impressive performance in the African Nations Championship (CHAN 2024). Their strong group-stage run not only secured top spot in Group A but also opened the door to millions of shillings in rewards from both government promises and continental prize money.
The national team finished their group campaign with ten points, ahead of Morocco who managed nine, while DR Congo fell short with six. Angola collected four, and Zambia finished bottom without a single point. The results secured Kenya a favorable quarter-final matchup and boosted morale across the squad.
Historic Rewards from the Presidency
Before the tournament began, a reward structure was introduced to inspire the team. Each win guaranteed every member of the 42-person delegation comprising 27 players and 15 technical staff Ksh 1 million. A draw earned them Ksh 500,000 each, with the promise of even higher amounts as the tournament progressed.
The incentives paid immediate dividends. A 1-0 opening win against DR Congo delivered Ksh 42 million directly to the squad. The following 1-1 draw brought another Ksh 21 million, before another big win against Morocco pushed their totals further. The victory over Zambia unlocked the highest single-match bonus of Ksh 2.5 million per person.
In addition, it was pledged that advancing to the quarterfinals would unlock Ksh 60 million for the team and federation, with Ksh 70 million for reaching the semifinals. Should Kenya go all the way and lift the trophy, an unprecedented Ksh 600 million awaits them. Housing incentives were also introduced, with each player promised a two-bedroom affordable housing unit if they secure a quarter-final win.
Boost from Additional Support
On top of government rewards, the team has received extra financial backing from political leaders who pledged additional bonuses after key victories. Their triumph over Zambia saw players pocket even more beyond the official bonuses, making their group stage campaign financially historic.
CAF Prize Money Secured
Beyond domestic rewards, Harambee Stars are also assured of continental earnings. By reaching the quarterfinals with a game to spare, they secured a guaranteed $450,000 (approximately Ksh 58.1 million) in prize money from the Confederation of African Football.
The combination of government incentives, political goodwill, and CAF payouts has made CHAN 2024 one of the most rewarding campaigns in the history of Harambee Stars. With confidence high and millions already flowing in, the dream of going all the way remains alive.
