Harambee Stars have secured their place in the CHAN 2024 quarter-finals without even kicking a ball, and with it comes a significant financial boost from the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
Kenya’s qualification was confirmed after DR Congo’s 2-0 victory over Angola ensured that, regardless of the outcome against Zambia in their final group match, the Stars cannot finish lower than second in Group A. With seven points already, and a better head-to-head record against both Morocco and DR Congo, their quarter-final berth is guaranteed.
The achievement is especially impressive considering they were drawn in the so-called ‘Group of Death’. Under the guidance of coach Benni McCarthy, the team has shown resilience and tactical discipline, outpacing expectations. They now await their quarter-final opponent, who will be either the leaders or runners-up from Group B. Tanzania currently tops that group on nine points, with Mauritania in second place on seven.
CAF has confirmed that all eight quarter-finalists at CHAN 2024 will receive $450,000 (approximately Ksh58 million). This substantial sum will add to the Football Kenya Federation’s coffers, providing much-needed resources for the sport’s development in the country.
The rewards increase significantly for teams progressing further. A semi-final appearance will guarantee at least $600,000 (Ksh77.5 million), the amount awarded to the fourth-placed side. Third place earns $700,000 (Ksh90.4 million). The runners-up will take home $1.2 million (Ksh155 million), while the tournament champions will pocket an impressive $3.5 million (Ksh452 million).
In addition to CAF’s prize money, the Harambee Stars have also been promised personal rewards from President William Ruto, who has committed Ksh1 million to each player for every group stage win and Ksh500,000 for each draw. After two wins and one draw in the group stage, the players have already received Ksh2.5 million each. A further Ksh2.5 million per player awaits if they defeat Zambia.
With the financial incentives and the pride of representing the nation, Harambee Stars will be highly motivated going into the knockout stages. A deep run in the tournament would not only bring in more funds but also boost Kenya’s profile in African football.
The focus now shifts to maintaining their strong form, building on their group stage momentum, and capitalising on this historic opportunity to challenge for CHAN 2024 glory.
