Morocco kicked off their 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) campaign with a commanding 2-0 win over Angola in the first night match at Nyayo Stadium in 13 years. The Atlas Lions delivered a dominant performance under the lights, sending a clear message to tournament rivals, including hosts Kenya’s Harambee Stars.
The match began with Angola showing early attacking intent, crafting several promising forward moves. However, they failed to seriously test Moroccan goalkeeper Elmehdi Al Harrar. Morocco gradually grew into the game and created the first major chance in the 20th minute when Mohamed Moufid connected with a cross from Anass El Mahraoui, only to see his header comfortably saved.
Ten minutes later, Ayoub Mouloua nearly gave Morocco the lead with a powerful close-range volley, but Angola’s goalkeeper Adilson Cipriano pulled off a brilliant save. The breakthrough eventually came in the 29th minute after a well-constructed move involving Youssef Belammari and Bouchaib Arrassi, ending with Imad Riahi calmly slotting home from inside the box.
Angola nearly responded immediately when Victor Nanque went down in the box under pressure from Marouane Louadni, but penalty appeals were waved away. Morocco continued to dominate and almost doubled their lead just before halftime when Anas Bach’s header flew just over the crossbar from a corner kick.
The second half saw Morocco maintain control, dictating possession and tempo. Angola attempted to counter through the pace of Nanque and creativity of Joao Muanha, but struggled to create clear chances. Joaquim Paciencia came close for Angola, but his header from close range missed the target.
Morocco sealed the win in the 81st minute when Marouane Louadni rose above the defence to head in a corner from Belammari, putting the result beyond doubt. Angola tried to stage a late comeback with a series of set-pieces, but Morocco’s defence held firm.
With goals in both halves and a confident, composed performance, Morocco made a strong statement in their Group B opener. The victory not only boosts their qualification hopes but also sets up an exciting narrative as they eye a clash with the Harambee Stars later in the tournament.
