Kenyan striker Moses Shumah has continued his impressive rise in African football after leading Zambia’s Power Dynamos to the CAF Champions League group stages, securing a major financial boost for the club worth Ksh90 million.
The Harambee Stars forward proved to be the difference in both legs of Power Dynamos’ second preliminary round tie against Ugandan champions Vipers SC. Shumah scored in each match to propel the Zambian champions to a 3-2 aggregate victory, sealing their place among Africa’s elite clubs.
In the decisive return leg held in Ndola, Power Dynamos battled to a 1-1 draw after a tense contest. The home side thought they had taken an early lead in the 14th minute through Frederick Mulambia, but the goal was disallowed for handball. Their persistence eventually paid off in the 68th minute when Shumah struck a clinical finish to give Dynamos the advantage. Although Vipers managed to level through Karim Watambala ten minutes from time, it was not enough to overturn the deficit.
Shumah had already played a key role in the first leg in Kampala, scoring a spectacular goal as Dynamos won 2-1. An own goal from the Ugandan side helped seal a crucial advantage for the Zambians, who carried two away goals into the return fixture.
By scoring two of Power Dynamos’ three goals in the tie, Shumah not only inspired the club to their first-ever appearance in the CAF Champions League group stages but also secured them a lucrative $700,000 (Ksh90 million) reward from CAF. The achievement marks a historic milestone for both the player and the club, who are now targeting even greater heights.
Head coach Osward Mutapa expressed pride in his team’s accomplishment, noting that reaching the group stages was their main objective for the season. “Now that we’re here, our focus shifts to the quarter-finals,” he said. “We’re not afraid of whoever comes next—we’ll fight for every point.”
With his goals and leadership, Moses Shumah has quickly justified his move to Zambia, earning praise as one of East Africa’s brightest attacking talents on the continental stage.
