Harambee Stars forward Moses Shumah produced a moment of brilliance to inspire Power Dynamos to a crucial 2-1 away victory over Ugandan champions Vipers SC in the CAF Champions League. The win puts the Zambian champions in pole position to qualify for the prestigious group stage of the continental competition.
The match in Kampala began with both teams showing attacking intent, but it was the home side that took the lead early in the second half through Yunus Sentamu in the 47th minute. However, Power Dynamos quickly regained their rhythm, with Shumah leading the fightback. Just six minutes after Vipers’ opener, the Kenyan striker displayed his class with a stunning equaliser that silenced the home crowd.
A high ball into the Vipers penalty area caused confusion among the defenders, and Shumah, showing great composure and awareness, allowed the ball to bounce before unleashing a powerful strike from a tight angle at the back post. The precision and power behind the shot left the goalkeeper with no chance, drawing Dynamos level and energising the visitors.
In a touching moment, Shumah celebrated his goal by hoisting the Kenyan flag, dedicating the strike to the late Prime Minister Raila Odinga, who was laid to rest in Siaya County on the same day. The gesture resonated deeply with fans back home, marking an emotional tribute alongside a world-class performance.
With renewed confidence, Power Dynamos continued to press forward and were rewarded in the 76th minute when Vipers’ defender Derrick Ndahiro turned the ball into his own net under pressure. The own goal handed Dynamos a vital advantage, ensuring they travel back to Ndola with two away goals and momentum firmly in their favour.
Head coach Oswald Mutapa praised his side’s fighting spirit and discipline, urging them to maintain focus ahead of the decisive return leg. “This result gives us a big boost heading into the second leg. The boys showed great character and belief. We have won the first half of the tie, but we must finish it off at home,” he said.
For Shumah, who joined Power Dynamos this season after topping the FKF Premier League scoring charts, the goal continues his impressive form. His influence has quickly grown within the squad, and fans will be counting on him to deliver once again when Dynamos host Vipers in Ndola as they seek a place among Africa’s elite clubs.
